Inside Zone out of Shotgun Doubles Flex is a straightforward zone run play with 11 personnel, showing the RB aligned next to the QB with two receivers stacked wide on each side. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme, working in unison to displace defenders and create a natural running lane based on the flow of the defensive front. This is a run play, not a pass concept, so the primary read progression belongs to the ball carrier: press the mesh point, read the double team block up front, and decide between the A-gap, B-gap, or bounce outside based on how the defensive line and linebackers flow.
Defensive Reads
Identify if the defense is running a one high or two high safety shell, since inside zone hits best against light boxes with a single high safety. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they are creeping downhill quickly they are keying run and you should be ready to cut back against their flow. Look for a user controlled defender spying the A-gap or a linebacker sitting still instead of flowing, this usually signals a defender reading the mesh point to blow up the play. Heavy blitz packages with extra defenders crashing the line can beat this play if the offensive line loses a one on one block, especially on the edge. Cover 3 or Cover 1 with aggressive run fits from the safety can shut this down quickly, so be ready to bounce outside if the alley defender overcommits inside.
Usage Tips
Check the defensive front pre-snap and look for light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box to confirm this is a favorable run look.
Use the flex alignment to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety down into the box, which tells you where the numbers advantage lies.
Hot route a receiver into a quick stalk block if you see a corner playing aggressive run support on the perimeter.
Pair this with RPO Zone Peek or RPO Peek Slant in the same set so the defense has to respect both the run and the quick pass off similar formation and personnel.
Use this play on early downs like first and ten or second and short to keep the defense honest and set up explosive shot plays like Four Verticals or PA Dagger later in the series.
