Mtn Drag H-Choice out of Shotgun Doubles Flex sends both outside receivers vertical while the slot receiver runs a drag across the middle and the H-back (inline) works an option route out of the backfield area to the flat. The X receiver breaks off his vertical stem into an out route along the boundary, giving you a natural high low read from deep shots to the drag underneath to the choice route in the flat. This is a route combo built to attack man and zone alike, with the drag serving as the primary read against man coverage and the H-choice working as the zone beater versus soft underneath drops.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap check safety depth and CB alignment on the X receiver, since a hard press look on the outside vertical routes signals man coverage and opens the drag. Watch the middle linebacker or nickel defender at the snap, since a fast drop into the drag lane signals zone coverage and means you should progress to the H-choice route instead. User controlled lurk defenders sitting in the shallow middle can jump the drag route, so have a built in answer with the choice route if you see a defender sink into that throwing lane. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can be exploited by the quick developing drag since it clears the underneath zone before pressure arrives. Cover 2 shells with deep half safeties tend to leave the drag and choice routes open underneath, while Cover 3 zones with a hard sitting linebacker can take away both the drag and the H-choice, forcing a checkdown or scramble.
Usage Tips
Read the middle of the field pre-snap to identify single high versus two high shells before committing to your first read on the drag.
Against man coverage key in on the drag route first since it creates natural separation off traffic and works well versus off coverage or blitz look CBs.
If linebackers sit low in zone, hot route the H-back choice route to a deeper option or bench it for the drag depending on leverage.
Use this play on second and medium or third and short situations where the drag and choice routes can pick up quick yardage after the catch.
Pair this with Drag Unders or Four Verticals in your play calling sequence to keep the defense guessing between shallow crossers and vertical shots from the same formation look.
