Orbit PA Y Cross is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Doubles Flex with orbit motion from the backfield before the snap. The diagram shows the Y running a deep crosser from the strong side all the way across the field, a receiver on the weak side pushing vertical up the seam, the strong side outside receiver sitting into a corner route, and the motion back releasing into a flat/shallow route underneath as a checkdown. This is a man beater built around the Y crosser stretching linebackers and safeties horizontally while the vertical seam route occupies deep coverage, so the primary read progression starts with the Y crossing route, works to the seam if the crosser is taken away, and checks down to the orbit motion man in the flat.
Watch the linebacker level immediately after the snap, if they bite hard on the play fake the Y crosser will have a clean throwing lane across the middle. Key the safety over the top on the seam route, if he stays flat footed reading run action the seam becomes an explosive shot play. Identify man coverage by tracking whether a defender shadows the orbit motion man pre-snap, this confirms man principles and tells you the crosser will win against trailing coverage. This play struggles against disciplined Cover 3 defenders who sink and wall off the crossing route, so avoid calling it into defenses that consistently drop a linebacker into the deep middle hole. Beware of nano blitzes or fast interior pressure since the play fake requires time to develop, if the user brings a delayed A gap blitz the quarterback may not get through the first read before the crosser clears.
Use the orbit motion pre-snap to identify man versus zone, if a defender follows the motion man across the formation you are almost certainly seeing man coverage and the Y crosser will have room to work against trailing linebackers.
Target the Y crosser against Cover 3 and Cover 1 since the deep crossing route naturally moves through the intermediate zone vacated by underneath defenders sprinting to the flat.
Hot route the seam runner into a deeper post if you see two high safeties bailing hard at the snap, that adjustment stresses the middle of the field against Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells.
Use this in early down situations, second and medium or third and short, since the play action freezes linebackers and opens the shallow crosser and flat route for easy YAC.
Pair this call with Orbit PA HB Wheel and Orbit RPO Alert Swing from the same set so defenses cannot key on the orbit motion, keeping linebackers honest and unable to jump the crosser.
