Outside Zone from Shotgun Doubles Flex is a pure zone run play, with the offensive line and RB flowing laterally toward the play side before the back reads his blocks and picks a crease. The diagram shows the two outside receivers and the flex receiver running vertical stem releases to occupy defenders deep and clear the alley, while the run action attacks the edge with a lateral entry point before angling upfield. The primary read progression is backside to frontside, meaning the RB reads the backside edge defender first, then keys the play side tackle and TE combo block to decide whether to bounce outside, bend into the alley, or cut back against overpursuit.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and count the box, a single high safety with six or fewer in the box favors the offense on outside zone. Watch the play side defensive end and outside linebacker leverage, if they are crashing hard inside they are vulnerable to the bounce read to the edge. Post-snap, key the play side flow of the linebackers, overaggressive downhill linebackers open up the cutback lane behind the zone blocking. User the play side edge defender or a linebacker with outside contain responsibility to force the RB to cut back into a scraping defender. Against a stacked box or run blitz look, expect the cutback lane to be the primary gain, so play a spy or hold a linebacker at depth to close it off.
Usage Tips
Check the defensive front pre-snap and identify whether the play side has a wide 9-technique or a tight edge, since that dictates whether the RB will bounce or bend the run.
Use the flex TE alignment to influence the box count, if the defense doesn't adjust to the flex you get a numbers advantage on the play side edge.
Pair this with RPO Zone Peek or RPO Peek Slant out of the same set so the defense has to respect both the run action and the perimeter pass threat, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their run fits.
Best called on early downs or short yardage when you want to keep defensive coordinators guessing between run and RPO out of an identical shotgun look.
If the defense loads the box with an extra defender in run support, motion or hot route one of the outside receivers into a quick option to punish the light coverage before the snap.
