Orbit PA HB Wheel is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Doubles Flex that uses orbit motion from the backfield before the snap to sell run action and create a wheel route matchup on the boundary. Post-snap the diagram shows the outside receiver on the wheel side clearing vertically, the slot running an under route across the middle that works behind the line, the backside receiver breaking outside on a comeback-style route, and the tight end releasing across the field on a deep drive route that flattens toward the sideline. The play design isolates the HB wheel out of the backfield as a man beater against linebackers who bite on the play-action fake, with the primary read starting on the wheel route and progressing to the underneath drag as the checkdown.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify safety alignment: two-high shells with safeties staying deep will squeeze the wheel route, so bait linebackers into run fits with contain discipline instead. Watch cornerback press versus off coverage on the wheel side, press corners can disrupt the wheel release at the line and force a longer developing route. Post-snap, spy the underneath linebackers for wheel route recognition, a lurking defender who stays flat-footed and reads the running back is the biggest threat to jumping this route. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is where this play gets exploited hardest, so if you see man alignment pre-snap expect the wheel route to win against a linebacker in coverage. Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with disciplined zone drops shut this play down, since the wheel route runs into the deep half defender and the drag route sits in a crowded underneath zone.
Usage Tips
Use orbit motion pre-snap to identify man coverage, if a defender follows the motion man across the formation you know it is man and the wheel route becomes an immediate high-value read.
Look for linebackers creeping into run support gaps before the snap, this confirms they are likely to bite on the play-action fake and open up the wheel route lane.
Best called on early downs (first or second and medium) when defenses are more likely to respect the run fake, avoid obvious passing downs where defenders sit back and read the play-action.
Combine this play with Orbit PA Y Cross and Orbit RPO Alert Swing in the same set, since all three use similar orbit motion and mirrored formation tells, keeping defenses guessing on run versus pass.
If the wheel route is capped by a deep safety rotating over the top, work the drag route underneath as your checkdown instead of forcing the wheel into double coverage.
