Defensive Reads
Diagnose the box count immediately at the snap since this play has zero deception and relies purely on numbers advantage. Watch the middle linebacker and any user-controlled defender flowing downhill fast, since an aggressive gap shoot can blow up the dive before it develops. Key on strong safety depth: if he is sitting close to the line in run support, this play gets shut down quickly. Look for defensive tackles that get displaced or double-teamed at the snap, which signals the dive lane is opening. Against goal line or heavy run-stopping fronts with extra defenders crashing the interior gaps, this play struggles and should be replaced with an outside run or RPO look.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs when the defense shows a light box of six or fewer defenders in the run fit. Check the middle linebacker depth pre-snap: if he is stacked tight over the center expecting run, consider audibling to a play-action shot instead. Use this play after establishing RPO Zone Peek or RPO Peek Slant from the same formation so the defense hesitates on run fits and second level defenders bite on the pass fakes. Take manual control of the HB and press the dive lane hard before bouncing outside if the interior gap is clogged. Pair this with Inside Zone or Outside Zone in your play-calling sequence to keep defenders guessing on which gap the run scheme is attacking. Avoid calling this into stacked fronts with extra defenders in the box since there is no misdirection to manufacture a lane.
