Breakdown

Corner Strike is a two-receiver-side pass concept out of Shotgun Doubles Flex that isolates a corner route on the right against a shallow crossing pattern underneath. The left side runs a deep out and a comeback/dig combo to hold zone defenders and clear space, while the right side stacks a corner route over a short flat/drag route to attack both underneath zone drops and man coverage on the sideline. This is a man beater against off coverage and a zone beater against Cover 3 or Cover 4, with the primary read starting on the right side corner route and working down to the underneath crosser if the corner is capped.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a deep half safety shading toward the right side corner route pre-snap, since that indicates Cover 2 or Cover 4 help over the top. If the flat defender or slot corner sinks with the underneath crosser instead of jumping the shallow route, that signals zone coverage and opens the crosser for a quick completion. Man coverage with no safety help on the right corner route is the biggest tell that this play beats the defense, since the corner route will win one on one down the sideline. Watch for a user-controlled defender lurking in the middle of the field, especially a linebacker or safety sitting in the throwing lane of the underneath crosser. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can disrupt the timing of the corner route, so quick game checks to the left side comeback route are necessary if the pocket collapses fast.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify if the corner on the right side is playing off or press since the corner route needs a clean release to win vertically down the sideline.

If the safety rotates to the corner route side, hot route the underneath crosser into a deeper option or peek the backside comeback for a quicker throw.

This play works best on second or third and medium to long, giving the corner route time to develop against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells.

Pair this with Curl Flats or Slants from the same set to keep the defense honest on shorter routes before hitting the corner strike concept for an explosive gain.

Use play-action or run fakes from Inside Zone or Outside Zone in this set first to slow down linebacker drops and open passing lanes for the corner and crossing routes.
