Read Option out of Shotgun Doubles Flex is a pure zone run play built around the QB and RB mesh point directly behind center. The diagram shows the QB reading the playside defensive end with the yellow read arrow, either handing off on the zone path or pulling it to keep and attack the edge himself. There is no route concept shown, the two outside receivers and TE are uninvolved blockers or decoys off screen, making this a run-first call that forces the defense to respect both the give and the keep.
Key the playside defensive end pre-snap, if the defense shows a 4-3 under front with the end crashing hard inside every play, sit on the keep read and squeeze the edge. Watch for a spy linebacker or a defender staying home on the QB, that alignment shuts down the keep option and forces you to trust the handoff instead. Man coverage on the perimeter with no extra flow to the mesh point tells you the defense is playing base run fits, so attack the edge with the QB keep for extra yardage. Heavy blitz packages that send extra defenders off the edge before the mesh point develops will blow this play up, check pre-snap for stacked edge pressure and consider hot routing or checking to a quicker RPO. If the defensive end sits flat and reads the mesh point without crashing, expect the CPU or user defender to squeeze both options, in that case look to cut the ball back against the grain.
Use this on early downs when you need to keep the defense honest against a heavy pass-first playbook, since the mesh read forces linebackers to hesitate. Check the alignment of the playside defensive end before the snap, if he is crashing hard down the line every snap you can key on pulling the ball and running the edge yourself. Pair Read Option with RPO Zone Peek or RPO Peek Slant from the same set so the defense cannot sit on the run fit without opening up a quick throw behind it. Against aggressive user defensive linemen who consistently attack the mesh point, hold the ball a beat longer to sell the fake and let the edge defender commit before pulling it. Best used in 2nd and short or 1st and 10 situations where defenses are more likely to load the box expecting a give.
