Mesh Drive out of Shotgun Bunch Wide Nasty is a classic man beater built around a shallow crossing mesh combo underneath two vertical clear-out routes. From the bunch side, one receiver runs a deep in that breaks left across the field while the other bunch receiver clears vertically up the seam before bending back left, and the point receiver runs a drive route across the formation at shallow depth to create the mesh with the drag coming from the backside tight end area. The lone receiver to the boundary runs a shallow drag underneath, and the running back releases out of the backfield on a wheel route up the sideline as an outlet against man coverage. Primary read progression starts with the mesh crossers underneath (drag into the drive), then works to the deep in-breaking route sitting down over the middle, with the running back wheel as the late checkdown or big-play answer versus man coverage that fails to pass off the crossers.
Defensive Reads
Read the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits shallow expecting the mesh he can undercut both crossers and blow up the primary read. Watch for a user-controlled defender sitting in the shallow zone or spying the mesh point, this is the biggest threat to this concept and usually signals a Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone match shell. Man coverage with off corners funnels well for this play since the crossers create natural separation, but tight bump and run corners with safety help over the top can recover in time to close throwing lanes. Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells with linebackers dropping into hook zones will squeeze the mesh crossers, so check if the deep in route has room to sit down in the intermediate window before committing. If the defense brings a nano blitz off the edge, the running back wheel release gets delayed by chip duties, so recognize blitz pressure pre-snap and be ready to get the ball out on the shallow drag hot route instead.
Usage Tips
Use this against man coverage looks, especially Cover 1 or Cover 0, since the mesh point creates natural traffic that forces defenders to fight through picks.
Pre-snap, check for a single high safety and press corners, both indicate man coverage where the mesh crossers will separate late.
If the defense shows off coverage or soft zone shells, hot route the drive route into a deeper dig or speed it up to attack the void before zone defenders can sink.
The running back wheel route is your home run answer versus man coverage that gets picked off at the mesh point, so keep an eye on the boundary corner biting inside.
