Defensive Reads

Identify any user-controlled defender lurking in the shallow middle zone, since a spy or rat defender sitting in that window can jump the crosser route and turn it into a turnover. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets beaten by the rub creating natural separation, but Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with deep zone help can clog the crosser's window and force the checkdown to the drag. Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to identify man versus zone before the snap, since the rub concept only creates real separation against man defenders. If the defense shows Cover 2 or Cover 4 with safeties sitting deep, look to the drag route first since the crosser will run into zone traffic over the middle. Hot route the deep vertical receiver into a comeback or hitch on obvious zone shells to give yourself a quicker underneath option.
