Cheat Spot out of Shotgun Bunch Wide Nasty is a Spot concept with pre-snap motion built to attack zone coverage, especially Cover 3. Off the bunch, one receiver runs a corner route up top, the middle receiver runs a quick spot/curl underneath, and the third man works an in-cut over the middle to sit in the zone window. The backside receiver runs a deep out and up the sideline while the running back releases on a checkdown flat route away from the bunch. Primary progression starts with the corner route as a hole shot against Cover 3, then works down to the spot/curl sitting underneath, and finishes with the backside out route or checkdown if the middle window is closed.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check the deep safety alignment since a two high shell suggests Cover 4 or Cover 2 which forces you to rely on the spot and in-cut routes rather than the corner shot. If the cornerback aligned over the bunch shows outside leverage with no deep help, expect Cover 3 or man coverage and prioritize the corner route immediately. Post-snap, key the flat defender's reaction to the spot route since a slow trigger or hesitation opens the window for the underneath completion, while an aggressive jump on the spot route means the in-cut behind it will be open. Watch for user-controlled defenders lurking in the shallow middle zone, since a spy or rat defender sitting in that window can jump the in-cut route and create a turnover opportunity if the quarterback doesn't recognize the disguise. Man coverage with underneath help, like Cover 1 with a robber, is the toughest matchup for this play since it clogs the spot and in-cut routes while a deep defender can still help over the top on the corner.
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense shifts into man or stays static in zone, since a defender running with the motion man confirms man coverage and tells you to prioritize the spot route as your man beater. Against Cover 3 look immediately to the corner route for the hole shot before the flat defender can widen and take away the sideline throw. If the underneath spot route is sat on by a linebacker or nickel defender, check down to the in-cut route working across the middle since it exploits the void behind the spot flat but in front of the deep thirds. Pair Cheat Spot with Z Spot or Verticals from the same set to keep defenders guessing between the spot concept and shot plays off similar bunch alignment. This play works best on second and medium or third and short since the spot route provides an easy completion outlet while the corner and out routes threaten explosive gains if the defense overplays underneath.
