Breakdown

Jags Duval is a play-action flood concept out of Shotgun Bunch Wide Nasty that overloads one side of the field with four distinct route levels. The bunch releases into a deep corner route, a curl sitting underneath it, and a shallow flat route from the tight bunch stack, while the backside receiver runs a hitch and the running back checks down on a short out to the flat opposite the bunch. This is a classic smash and flood combo built to beat both Cover 3 and Cover 2 shells by stretching zones vertically and horizontally, with man beater traits baked in through the natural picks created by the bunch alignment.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat defender at the snap since the corner and flat combo puts him in a bind between the shallow flat route and the deep corner. If the defense shows two deep safeties pre-snap, expect the curl to sit in the vacated middle zone for an easy completion. Look for a lurking linebacker or safety sitting in the shallow hook zone, as he can jump the curl route if he reads quarterback eyes early. Man coverage on the bunch side is vulnerable to natural rub and pick action created by the tight alignment, so an aggressive man defender can get hung up. Blitz packages that bring pressure off the edge opposite the bunch can disrupt the play action fake, so check protection or hot route the running back if you see a nano blitz look.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the safeties are showing two-high or rotating to single-high before the snap since this concept attacks both shells differently.

If you see Cover 3, key the corner route to work behind the flat defender and in front of the deep third safety for the primary window.

Against Cover 2, the corner and curl combo creates a high low read on the flat defender, so work quarterback eyes from deep to underneath.

Use the flat route as your check down against a hard blitz since the running back and flat man release quickly underneath the bunch traffic.

Pair this call with Cheat Flood Switch or Flood Switch on back to back downs to keep linebackers and safeties guessing on the flood concept while disguising the same route tree.
