Breakdown

Y Trail out of Shotgun Box Y Split is a man beater built around the tight end running a trail route that breaks away from underneath man coverage, giving you a rub or pick element off the other receivers in the concept. The blocking scheme is a standard shotgun protection with the running back available to check release into a flare or stay in to pass block, buying time for the trail route to develop. Your primary read progression starts with the Y (tight end) trail route against man leverage, then works to the intermediate crosser or dig as the second read, and finally to the checkdown or flare out of the backfield if the initial window is not there.

Defensive Reads

Man coverage with a linebacker or slot corner locked on the tight end is the primary matchup this route exploits, look for the trail break to separate against inside technique defenders Cover 3 with underneath zone droppers can still be attacked if the flat defender widens too quickly, leaving a soft spot behind him for the trail route to sit in Cover 2 shells with hard corner press at the line tend to shut this down since the trail route gets rerouted before it can build separation Watch for a user linebacker sitting in a shallow zone or spying the tight end release, that is a lurk threat designed to jump the trail concept Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge force the running back into pass protection, which removes your checkdown option and puts pressure on the trail read to win immediately

Usage Tips

Diagnose man versus zone pre-snap by looking at the cornerback alignment on the tight end, tight man press or shaded inside leverage tells you the trail route has a clean angle to break open

Motion the tight end or use a hot route to adjust his release point if you see a linebacker sitting directly over him in a bunched box

This play hits best on second and medium to third and short to medium since the trail route needs a defender biting on the initial break to fully separate

Pair this call with Curls or Quick Short Post from the same set earlier in a series to condition the defense into thinking short zone drops, then hit Y Trail when they sell out on the flat

Use play action tags sparingly here since the concept already relies on timing, if you need a run fake look to PA WR In or PA Mills Crosser instead within the same personnel group

User the deep safety only if you see two high shells rotating late, otherwise stay disciplined on the trail route read since it is the fastest developing window
