Y Corner H Option

Breakdown

Y Corner H Option out of Shotgun Box Y Split sends the Y tight end on a corner route to attack the boundary while the H back runs an option route out of the backfield to sit against underneath zone or break off man coverage. This concept is built as a man beater first, using the corner route to stretch the cornerback vertically and the option route as a built in answer against blitz or overplayed leverage. The primary read starts with the Y corner against single high shells, then works down to the H option as the check down and hot route escape versus pressure.

Defensive Reads

Read the cornerback press or off alignment before the snap, off coverage gives extra cushion that slows the corner route timing. Identify single high safety looks, this tells you Cover 1 or Cover 3 is likely and the corner route has room to work against trail technique. Watch for the flat or curl to flat defender post-snap, if he sinks deep the H option settles into open grass for an easy completion. Beware of Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties, they take away the corner route window and force you to rely on the H option and any underneath checkdowns. Key on user controlled defenders jumping the corner route route stem, if the user peels off the flat to bait the throw, look to the H option immediately as the lurk defender vacates space underneath.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap, single high shells open up the Y corner route against man coverage on the outside cornerback.

Use the H option as your answer against zone blitz looks or when the defense shows Cover 2 with a hard flat defender sitting on shallow routes.

Motion the H back pre-snap to diagnose man versus zone, if a linebacker or safety follows the motion you are getting man coverage and the corner route wins immediately.

Pair this play with Curls or Quick Short Post from the same set to keep the defense guessing between vertical shots and quick game timing throws.

Best called on second and medium or third and short situations where the option route has a built in outlet if the corner route is well covered.
