The concept pairs an underneath in-cut with a deeper crossing route working the same side, creating a natural pick at the release and a high low read for the quarterback. Primary progression starts with the shallow in route to see if the switch confuses man leverage, then works up to the deeper crosser sitting behind linebackers, and finally checks down if both windows are capped.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment, if both safeties are deep and cornerbacks are pressed at the line, expect man coverage that the switch release is designed to confuse. Post-snap, watch for a user controlled linebacker sitting in the shallow crossing lane, since that lurk defender can jump the underneath in route and bait a turnover if you throw too early. Identify Cover 3 by watching the flow of the underneath defenders to one side, the deep crosser working away from that flow is your answer against the sink zone. Man coverage with a single high safety is where this play thrives most, the switch release forces defenders to fight through traffic and often creates natural separation. Beware of Cover 2 with aggressive corner jams at the line, since that can disrupt the switch release timing and delay both routes long enough for the pass rush to close the pocket.
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance to identify if the defense is showing two high or single high, since Levels Switch punishes single high man coverage the most due to the switch release confusing corners on their leverage assignment.
Against zone shells, focus on the deep crosser sitting in the seam or hole between the linebacker level and the safety, this is your primary window versus Tampa 2 or Cover 3 sink zones.
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if you see a blitz look, this gives you a fast answer against nano blitzes or five and six man pressure packages.
Pair this play with Curls or Quick Unders in your play calling sequence, since both give the illusion of similar shallow crossing action but attack different levels, forcing user defenders to hesitate on their jumps.
Best used on second and medium or third and short to medium, where the underneath switch route can pick up the sticks quickly if the defense sits back in zone.
