Drive is a classic man beater built around a shallow crosser and a deep dig working together to stretch defenders horizontally and vertically at the same time. The concept sends one receiver on a drive route underneath while a second route breaks in behind it at intermediate depth, creating natural rub traffic against man coverage and picking apart the seams in zone drops. Out of Shotgun 11 personnel with no tags, the primary read progression starts with the shallow drive route to see if it clears the underneath linebackers, then works up to the dig or crosser sitting behind it, and finally to any check down or backside option if both are covered.
Check the safety alignment before the snap since two high shells tell you the dig route will have a soft window to sit in behind the linebackers. Watch the flow of the linebackers immediately after the snap because if they widen with the shallow drive route it opens the middle for the crosser to work underneath the second level. Identify man coverage by looking for defenders mirroring receiver releases at the snap, since the natural traffic from the crossing routes will spring separation against man defenders who trail through the pick. Be aware of a user controlled lurk defender sitting in the shallow middle zone since that is the primary counter to this concept and it can jump the underneath crosser if the quarterback stares it down. Cover 2 with aggressive underneath zone drops and disciplined linebackers who do not overcommit to the shallow route can take away both levels of this concept and force a checkdown.
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the linebacker depth to confirm if you are facing man or zone before the snap. Against man coverage, trust the initial shallow read to pick and separate off the traffic near the line of scrimmage. Against zone shells, especially Cover 3 or Cover 4, hold your eyes on the dig route since it will settle into the soft spot behind the underneath zone defenders. This play works best on second and medium or third and medium since the route depths give you a built in answer for both quick access and intermediate sticks. Pair Drive with Curls or Levels Switch in your play calling sequence so defenders who bite on the shallow crosser get burned by the deeper comeback breaks on the next play call. Use Quick Short Post or Quick Unders as a quick game changeup if you see the defense sitting on Drive after repeated looks.
