PA Mills Crosser is a play-action shot play out of Shotgun Box Y Split that layers a deep crossing route with the classic Mills concept (post and dig combo) to attack the middle of the field. The play-action fake to the HB holds linebackers and safeties for a beat, opening throwing lanes for the crosser working horizontally underneath the deep post. This is primarily a man beater since the crosser creates natural separation against man defenders trailing across the field, though it can also stress zone defenders who fail to pass off the crosser at the seam. Your primary read starts with the deep post to see if the safety bites on the play-action, then works down to the crosser as your intermediate answer, with the dig as a late breaking checkdown against zone drops.
Read the middle linebacker first, if he steps up hard on the play-action fake you have a clean throwing lane to the crosser immediately. Check for two high safeties versus single high, since single high alignments often mean the deep post has a bigger window against Cover 3 or Cover 1. Watch for a user controlled defender sitting in the crosser's lane, this is the biggest threat to the play since a lurking linebacker or safety can jump the route and create a turnover. Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells with disciplined zone drops can shut this down by having a safety rob the deep crosser while corners deny the post, so have your dig route as the answer. If you see a blitz look with man coverage behind it, get the ball out fast to the crosser since the play-action fake will not hold long against extra pass rushers and your protection may not sustain.
Use this play on second or third and medium when defenses start sitting on quick game to punish them for cheating up on run action.
Check the safety depth before the snap, if you see two deep safeties holding steady you likely want to bail off the post and go straight to the crosser or dig.
Hot route the HB into a checkdown flare if you anticipate a heavy blitz, since the play-action fake naturally occupies second level defenders and buys extra time.
Pair this with PA WR In or Y Trail in your play-calling sequence, since both look identical at the snap but attack different levels, forcing linebackers to guess on run fits.
Against man coverage, manually user the crosser and rely on the natural pick action from the crossing route to shed the defender, then throw with anticipation before he fully clears.
