Breakdown

Curls out of Shotgun Box Y Split is a zone beater built around a curl route concept that settles receivers into soft spots against off coverage and zone drops. The route combo typically features multiple receivers running curls at staggered depths (usually 10 to 12 yards) with the TE working an underneath option, creating natural picture reads against Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells. Primary progression starts with the outside curl to the boundary, then works to the field side curl, and checks down to the underneath TE or backfield option if the linebackers sink hard into the curl windows.

Defensive Reads

Read the safety alignment pre-snap, two high safeties usually signal Cover 4 or Cover 2 which opens up the deep curl windows against soft corners. Check cornerback depth at the line, off man or zone corners give you the green light to sit receivers down in the curl, while press man corners force you to hot route into a quicker breaking route. Post-snap, track the flow of the underneath linebackers, if they widen out to jump the curl routes it usually means a user is lurking, so look to hit the opposite side curl or dump to the checkdown. This play struggles against aggressive Cover 3 sky or buzz coverage where the safety rotates down fast enough to squeeze the curl window before the ball arrives. Watch for nano blitz packages or overload pressure off the edge, since the curl progression takes time to develop and a well timed blitz can collapse the pocket before your primary read opens.

Usage Tips

Attack Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells first since the curl windows sit right in the soft spot behind the underneath zone defenders and in front of the deep thirds or quarters.

Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if you see man coverage pre-snap, since curls stall against tight man unless you create separation with a double move.

Use this play on second and medium to third and short situations where the sit routes give the quarterback a rhythm throw before the pocket collapses.

Pair Curls with Comebacks or Levels Switch in the same set to keep defenders guessing between sit routes and breaking routes off similar formation looks.

Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they show heavy zone drop and sink under the curls, check the ball down to the TE option or HB flare instead of forcing it into a shrinking window.
