Breakdown

Mtn Crossers is a mesh based passing concept out of Shotgun Box Y Split with 11 personnel, built to attack man and zone coverage with two crossing routes working underneath a deeper mountain route on the backside. The mesh point creates natural traffic that forces defenders to fight through picks, making it a strong man beater versus man to man coverage while the deep mountain route occupies safeties and linebackers dropping into zone. The primary read progression starts with the underneath crossers working from the near side to far side of the field, then climbs to the mountain route if the mesh is jumped or the deep middle opens up.

Defensive Reads

Watch for man coverage indicators like cornerbacks lined up tight to the receivers pre snap, since the crossing routes will pick and separate quickly against man to man Identify single high safety looks such as cover 1 or cover 3, these shells leave the underneath mesh wide open because there is no help defender to jump the crossers Key on linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink into deep zone drops the crossers will settle into soft spots for an easy completion Beware of cover 2 or pattern match zones with a user controlled lurk defender sitting in the shallow crossing lanes, this can bait a turnover if you force the mesh read Read blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge, since a hot mesh concept over the middle can pick up the blitz fast but a delayed throw against interior pressure will get the quarterback hit

Usage Tips

Use this play on second and medium to third and short situations where the underneath crossers can pick up the sticks quickly against man coverage

Check the middle of the field pre snap, if the safeties show a single high shell the mesh crossers will have room to work against man defenders trailing from behind

Hot route the backside receiver into a hitch or flat route against soft cover 2 or cover 4 to give yourself an instant checkdown against zone drops

Pair this play with Mtn HB Draw or Mtn Slot Cross earlier in a drive to get defenders keying on run action or shallow crosses, then hit them with the deep mountain shot when they cheat their linebackers up

Use motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into showing blitz, since the mesh underneath beats most nano blitz packages if you get the ball out before the second level defenders reset
