Inside Zone out of Shotgun Box Y Split is a base zone run play designed to attack the interior gaps with the offensive line stepping in unison to seal the front. The line flows laterally toward the play side, reading defensive line movement to create a natural cutback lane, while the fullback or tight end blocking assignment secures the edge. Your primary read is the play side A gap first, then bounce to the B gap or backside cutback if the linebackers flow too hard toward the initial hole.
Check the box count pre-snap, six or fewer defenders in the box is a green light to run this play. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they are shaded toward the play side A gap you should plan to bounce to the cutback lane instead of forcing it inside. Identify a Mike linebacker blitzing downhill immediately after the snap, since a fast trigger from the middle linebacker can blow up the play before the line finishes its zone steps. Look for safety rotation into the box on this personnel grouping, since a heavy run alignment with both safeties near the line signals a run blitz or run commit call designed to stuff Inside Zone. Beware of user controlled defenders spying the run lane, particularly a user Mike linebacker sitting in the play side gap, since that indicates the defense is keying the interior run and will not respect the play fake.
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the linebacker depth to confirm they are not sitting in run fit gaps before the snap.
Attack light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box, especially against nickel or dime personnel that leaves only two off ball linebackers.
Manually control your blocking tight end or fullback at the point of attack if you see a defender crashing down hard, since the CPU AI can miss reach blocks against aggressive fronts.
Pair this with PA Mills Crosser or PA WR In from the same set once you have established Inside Zone, since defenses that key run fits hard will bite on the play fake and open up crossing routes behind them.
Use Inside Zone on early downs, especially first and ten or second and short, to keep defenses honest and set up explosive shot plays later in the drive.
Avoid calling this into stacked eight man boxes with both safeties creeping down, since there is no outlet or RPO tag to punish that look here.
