Same Side Zone is an outside zone run concept out of Shotgun Box Y Split with 11 personnel, sending the offensive line and blocking surface flowing to the play side while the fullback role is replaced by the TE working the edge. The primary read progression starts with the playside guard and tackle combo blocking down to seal the first two levels, then bounces to the running back's aiming point which is dictated by the flow of the defensive line and the alley defender. This is a run play designed to hit gaps created by zone flow, and it pairs well with play-action shots off the same look since the run action is identical to Same Side Zone.
Read the playside linebacker's depth at the snap, if he is crashing downhill fast he is vulnerable to a cutback lane Watch the alley defender, usually a safety or slot corner, since he is the primary run fit defender who determines whether the ball bounces or stays tight Identify if the defense is in a run-heavy front like a 46 or bear front, which clogs the interior gaps and forces the back wider than the zone naturally flows Check for overloaded fronts or a stacked box with a blitzing linebacker, since this run concept struggles against gap-shooting nano blitz packages that beat zone blocking with penetration Look for cornerback and safety rotation post-snap to confirm run support, if the defense rotates hard to the play side pre-snap this run play will get bottled up quickly

Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more in the box against 11 personnel, consider audibling to a pass concept instead
Use the RB's patience cue, let the zone develop and press the crease outside the tackle box rather than forcing it inside immediately
Motion the TE across the formation pre-snap to identify if the defense is playing man or zone based on whether a defender follows
Sequence this run early in a series so the play-action rollouts and RPO looks off similar backfield action, like Y Trail or Y Corner H Option, hit harder later in the drive
