Sail Dbl Post is a route combo play out of Shotgun Box Y Split that layers a sail concept on one side with a double post shot on the other, giving you both a horizontal stretch and a vertical shot in one call. The sail (flat, out, and corner or deep out stacked vertically) stretches zone defenders sideline to sideline and gives quick access against man coverage, while the two post routes attack the middle of the field and hunt for a blown coverage or a safety who bites on the sail side. This is a pass play built to beat both man and zone, with the primary read starting on the double post to the field for an explosive shot, then working back to the sail side flat to out combo if the posts are covered or the safety stays deep.
Pre-snap, look at safety depth and spacing, a single high safety shell signals the post routes will have less help over the top and increases the chance of a big play Post-snap, watch the middle linebacker's drop, if he sinks deep into the throwing lane on the double post side you may need to check down to the sail concept Identify user-controlled defenders lurking near the intermediate middle of the field, since a smart user can jump the inside post route and bait a turnover Cover 3 with a rolled safety to the sail side is the toughest shell to beat here, since it clogs the flat and out combo while keeping help over the post Man coverage with no safety help over the top is where this play hits hardest, since both posts can win against trailing defenders and create a natural pick opportunity
Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two deep safeties split evenly there is a good chance one post will pull a safety and open a window for the other post to sit behind the linebackers
Against man coverage, key on the double post immediately since it creates natural rub and separation against man defenders who trail through traffic
If the corner on the sail side is playing off, take the underneath out route quickly for a safe, high percentage gain instead of forcing the post
Use hot routes to convert the sail flat route into a quick out or option route against Cover 2 shells if the flat defender sits too shallow
Pair this play with Curls or Quick Short Post earlier in a drive to set up the defense expecting shorter routes, then hit Sail Dbl Post for the double post shot when the defense sells out to stop underneath throws
