Quick Fork Zig is a quick-hitting passing concept out of Shotgun Box Y Split, built to attack the middle of the field before pressure develops. The route combo pairs a fork concept to one side with a zig (a sharp diagonal breaking route) working across the field, giving the quarterback both a horizontal stretch and a quick in-cut option underneath. This is primarily a man beater that exploits natural picks and rubs from the fork routes, though the zig route sitting down in soft spots also gives you a zone beater answer versus off coverage. The primary read progression starts with the fork concept for a pre-snap or immediate post-snap access throw, then works to the zig route breaking inside as the secondary read if the outside is capped.
Pre-snap, identify whether the corners are playing press or off man, since press man coverage makes the fork rub concept nearly automatic for the quick throw. Read the middle linebacker depth before the snap: if he is sitting shallow in a Tampa 2 or robber shell, the zig route into the middle can be a risky throw with a user lurking underneath. Post-snap, watch for the safety rotation because a two high shell that stays two high tells you the defense expects the quick throw and may squat their corners to jump the fork routes. If you see Cover 3 or Cover 4 match, the zig route becomes the better answer since it settles in the seam between zone defenders rather than trying to beat a cornerback in man. Beware of user-controlled defenders spying the middle of the field or dropping into a rat lurk, since they can undercut the zig route if the quarterback holds the ball too long.
Use this play on early downs or third and short when you need a high-percentage completion against man coverage because the fork concept creates natural rub picks against tight man defenders.
Check the cornerback alignment pre-snap: if you see press man on the outside receivers, expect the fork routes to win quickly off the pick action, so get the ball out on time.
Against zone shells, hot route the zig runner to sit in the honey hole between the underneath zone and the deep third, since the natural break of the zig route settles nicely into that window.
Pair this play with Curls or Quick Unders in your play-calling sequence so the defense has to respect both a quick underneath game and a slightly deeper curl breakpoint, keeping linebackers honest.
If the defense starts jumping the fork concept after a few reps, counter with Quick Short Post or Levels Switch from the same formation to keep the picture disguised while still hitting quick access throws.
