Mtn Slot Cross

Breakdown

Mtn Slot Cross is a man beater built out of Shotgun Box Y Split with 11 personnel, designed to attack the middle of the field with a crossing route from the slot combined with a mountain (vertical stem) concept from the outside receivers. The crossing route works as a natural pick against man coverage, forcing defenders into traffic while the vertical routes stretch the deep zones and hold safeties. Primary read progression starts with the slot cross working to the shallow to intermediate window, then progresses to the mountain routes on the outside if the crosser is taken away, with the running back checking down as the final outlet against pressure.

Defensive Reads

Check the slot cornerback pre-snap, if he is aligned tight in man technique the cross should have a favorable matchup against most linebackers and safeties in coverage. Watch for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, this player can jump the crossing route and turn it into a pick six if you force the throw. Identify two high safeties before the snap, this usually signals Cover 2 or Cover 4 which invites the mountain routes on the outside rather than the shorter crosser. Post snap, track the middle linebacker's drop, if he sinks deep into the throwing lane of the crosser you need to reset your progression to the outside routes quickly. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can be countered by getting the ball out fast on the cross, since it is designed to beat pressure with a quick timing throw.

Usage Tips

Motion the slot receiver pre-snap to help identify man versus zone based on whether a defender follows across the formation.

If you see man coverage with no safety help over the top, hit the slot cross in stride and let him work through traffic for extra yards after the catch.

Against zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4, look to the mountain routes on the outside since the crosser will run into underneath zone defenders.

Use this play on second and medium to third and medium situations where the crosser can pick up a manageable chunk without needing a home run.

Pair this play with Mtn Crossers or Levels Switch in your play-calling sequence to keep the defense guessing between crossing concepts and to punish defenders who key on the cross every snap.
