Breakdown

HB Power O out of Pistol Ace 12 personnel is a gap scheme run play built to overload one side of the line with a pulling blocker. The line down blocks away from the play side while a guard pulls to lead through the hole, and the HB takes the handoff from the pistol alignment and reads the pulling blocker to decide whether to press the hole or bounce it outside. This is a downhill run play, not a play-action or RPO look, designed to move the pile with double team blocks at the point of attack and a kickout or lead block clearing the alley for the back.

Defensive Reads

Key the play side linebacker depth before the snap, if he is stacked tight behind the defensive line he can shoot the gap and blow up the pulling guard's path. Watch for a defensive tackle or nose shaded into the pulling guard's lane, that alignment is designed to clog the hole and force the back to bounce outside into unblocked defenders. Identify run blitzes and edge pressure from the play side, an overloaded edge can beat the kickout block before the puller ever gets there. Check strong safety depth, if he is sitting close to the box at eight or nine yards he can fill the alley fast and cap the cutback lane. Man coverage on the perimeter is largely irrelevant here since this is a run play, so focus your defensive attention on gap integrity and linebacker fits rather than route coverage.

Usage Tips

Run this play out of 12 personnel when the defense shows a light box with six or fewer defenders to guarantee a numbers advantage at the point of attack.

Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into flowing early, then let the pulling guard adjust his path off the leverage the defense gives you.

Pair this with HB Zone Wk and HB Counter earlier in a series so the defense has to respect both power and misdirection, which slows down linebacker fits on Power O later in the game.

Against stacked fronts with a defender over your pulling guard, hot route the play side tight end to a down block or check to Strong Power to get an extra gap blocker.

Save this call for early down situations like first and ten or second and short where a physical, gap-controlled run keeps you on schedule and sets up PA Power O off the same look.
