PA Ctr Waggle is a play-action rollout out of Pistol Ace 12 personnel that sells a center run fake before the QB rolls right off the waggle action. The blue route is the flat runner sneaking underneath as the QB's first checkdown, the red route breaks outside then hooks back as the rollout target, and the two yellow routes are deep crossers stretching the field horizontally on the backside to hold linebackers and safeties. This is a play-action man beater, primary read progression starts with the flat route on the roll, then works to the corner breaking hook route, with the deep crossers as the home run option if the defense bites hard on the run fake.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth and shoulder turn immediately after the snap, if they step up hard on the run fake you have a clean throwing lane to the flat and hook routes. Check single high versus two high safety shells pre-snap, single high man coverage is where this waggle hurts defenses most because the rollout isolates the flat defender. Man coverage with no underneath help lets the flat route and hook route work rhythm throws, so blitzing corners or a lurking Mike linebacker sitting on the waggle side can jump the flat route and blow up the read. Cover 2 or Cover 4 zone shells with disciplined linebackers dropping to intermediate zones can take away both the hook and the flat, forcing a checkdown or scramble. Watch for a spy or contain defender assigned to the QB's roll side, since a disciplined edge defender staying home on contain eliminates the rollout advantage and forces a rushed throw.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs, first or second and short to medium, when the defense expects run based on personnel and hash alignment. Check the box count pre-snap, if you see six or more in the box with linebackers creeping up, the run fake has a better chance to freeze them on the waggle. Use the rollout to buy time against exotic pressure, since the QB moving outside the pocket neutralizes edge blitzes and interior twists. Hot route the deep yellow crosser into a comeback or sit route versus zone defenders sinking underneath. Pair this play with HB Zone Wk and HB Dive earlier in a series so the defense keys run action, then hit them with the waggle for an explosive shot play. Combine with Read Option in your call sheet to keep linebackers guessing on the mesh point and slow their run fits.
