Breakdown

HB Counter out of Pistol Ace with 12 personnel is a power run play built to attack the backside of the defensive front. The offensive line pulls the backside guard and tackle to lead through the hole while the fullback and playside blockers seal the point of attack, creating a misdirection look that pulls linebackers away from the actual running lane. This is a pure run play with no route combos or pass options attached, and the primary read for the ball carrier is to press the initial flow toward the play call side, let the pullers get out in front, then decide between the cutback lane or following the lead blocker through the counter hole.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check linebacker depth and gap alignment since HB Counter thrives against light boxes and defenses that are shaded to the strong side. If the defense shows a stacked front with edge defenders crashing hard down the line, the counter blocking scheme can lose the angle on the pullers. Post-snap, key the backside defensive end and any user-controlled defender flowing hard with the initial fake, as disciplined edge play or a squeeze technique kills the cutback lane. Watch for linebackers who stay home and read through the backfield instead of flowing with the fake, since that eliminates the misdirection advantage this play depends on. Man coverage on the perimeter does not affect this play much since it is a run design, but a defense in a run blitz or heavy zone-fill look at the second level can beat the pulling guard to the hole.

Usage Tips

Run this out of Pistol on early downs like first and ten or second and short to keep the defense honest against your pass-heavy calls from the same formation. Watch the linebacker flow pre-snap, if they are stacked tight or showing blitz off the edge, counter action can gash them once they overpursue the initial fake. Pair this with HB Zone Wk and HB Dive from the same personnel and formation so defenders cannot key on your run tendencies by alignment alone. Use it after showing PA Boot or PA Ctr Waggle earlier in the drive so linebackers respect the pass fake and bite on the counter step. Avoid calling this against defenses that are stunting hard inside since the pulling linemen can get beat to the point of attack before they climb.
