PA Boot is a play-action bootleg out of Pistol Ace 12 personnel that pulls the quarterback out of the pocket to sell run action before flowing to the right. The route design shows a deep dig or crossing route sitting underneath from the backside receiver, a corner route breaking outside from the middle receiver, a wheel route from the flat receiver climbing vertically along the sideline, and a shallow drag underneath from the tight end near the formation to give the QB a checkdown on the move. The primary read progression works high to low on the bootleg side: check the corner route first for the explosive shot, work down to the wheel route if the corner is capped, and dump off to the shallow drag or backside dig if the pocket collapses or the flat defender sinks with the wheel.
Defensive Reads
Diagnose the safety shell before the snap, a single high safety indicates man or cover 3 which opens up the corner route and wheel route combo on the boundary. Two deep safeties splitting the field usually means cover 2 or cover 4, in which case the shallow drag and backside dig become the higher percentage throws underneath the coverage. Key the flat defender or curl to flat defender after the snap, if he widens to carry the wheel route the corner route sits down in the void behind him. Watch for a user linebacker spying the quarterback on the bootleg, this is the biggest threat to the play since a disciplined spy can jump the shallow drag or force an early throw. Against a nano blitz or overload pressure to the play side, the fake will not hold long enough to develop the deep routes, so key defensive line width and edge rusher leverage pre-snap to anticipate a quick pressure look.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs or in play-action friendly counts like second and medium to keep the safeties honest and sell the run fake. Watch for linebacker flow at the snap, if they bite hard on the play fake the wheel route and corner route will both have room to work against a compromised zone. Use pre-snap motion or a shift to identify man versus zone, if you see man coverage with a linebacker matched on the tight end drag, that matchup is an easy completion underneath. Pair this play in your call sheet with HB Zone Wk or HB Dive to establish the run threat first, then dial up PA Boot once the defense starts creeping linebackers into the box. Hot route the backside dig into a deeper comeback against soft zone shells if you need a bigger chunk play on third and long.
