Breakdown

Strong Power is a downhill gap run out of Pistol Ace 12 personnel, with the HB aligned behind the QB and the strong side loaded with a TE and extra blocker. The diagram shows the backfield action angling the RB toward the strength of the formation behind a double team at the point of attack, with the offensive line pulling and sealing to create a lane inside the tackle box. This is a pure run play designed to overpower a base front, not a play-action or RPO, and the primary read progression is play side gap first, then bounce outside if the double team gets pushed off the ball or a linebacker fills too fast.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, count the box. If there are six or fewer defenders in the box against 12 personnel, Strong Power has a numbers advantage and should hit for positive yardage most snaps. Watch the strong side linebacker depth. If he is stacked tight behind the defensive end at three yards or less, he is in position to blow up the double team before the seal is set, so audible away from this play. Key the free safety alignment. A single high safety who stays deep post snap signals a light box and confirms Strong Power should hit inside, while two deep safeties rotating down into the box is a run key that should make you check to a pass or bounce play. Post snap, if the user controlled defender flows hard downhill filling the play side gap immediately, that is a sign the defense guessed run, so have HB Counter or Read Option ready as a counter punch on the next call. Look for a five technique defensive end who slants inside pre-snap, since that alignment can clog the intended running lane and force a cutback that this scheme is not designed to hit cleanly.

Usage Tips

Run this against base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts where the strong side defensive end and linebacker are not stacked two gaps deep, since the double team needs a clean double team lane to work.

Use pre-snap motion or a TE shift to identify if the defense is in a run-fit look with the strong safety crashed down, and if so consider bouncing to HB Zone Wk or HB Counter instead since Strong Power will run into extra bodies.

Pair this with HB Dive and HB Slam earlier in a series to condition the defense to sit on quick interior hits, then hit Strong Power on second or third down to draw linebackers up before you go to PA Boot or PA Power O off the same look.

Best used on second and short or first and ten when you want to establish tempo and force the defense to respect the run before dialing up Quick Slants or Corner Post out of the same personnel.

If the nickel or dime package is on the field, expect fewer bodies in the box, so this is a great money play to call since Strong Power should win the numbers battle at the point of attack.
