PA Deep In runs out of Pistol Ace 12 personnel with play action to sell the run fake before the QB rolls into a dropback pocket. Both outside receivers push vertical up the seams before breaking sharply inside on deep in routes around 15 to 18 yards, while the inline TE runs a shallow flat/drag route to the boundary and the backside TE releases on a short comeback out route. The fifth route is a check release from the backfield that curls back toward the line as an outlet. This is a play-action man beater designed to attack seams and hi-lo linebackers, with the primary read progressing from the deep in breaking route on the play side to the underneath drag and finally the check-down curl if the safeties clamp down on the in-cuts.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing man or zone by checking corner depth and linebacker spacing over the slot alignment, since press man corners on the outside receivers signal a good matchup for the deep in break against trail technique. Watch for two deep safeties rotating down after the snap, which indicates zone coverage and means you should read the flat defender and any underneath robber before committing to the deep in throw. If the defense shows a heavy blitz package with linebackers crashing downhill immediately after the play fake, get the ball out quickly to the check release curl or the shallow drag since the deep ins take too long to develop against pressure. User-controlled lurk defenders sitting in the middle of the field are the biggest threat to this concept, so scan for a defender sitting at 10 to 15 yards in the throwing lane before pulling the trigger on the deep in route. Cover 3 with a sky safety over the top and a hard-charging Mike linebacker dropping into the intermediate zone will clog both deep in routes, so switch to the check release or bail out to the drag route underneath if you see this shell develop.
Usage Tips
Sell the run fake by holding the ball fully into the animation before pulling to throw, since defenses that respect HB Zone Wk and HB Dive out of this same Ace Pistol set will bite on the fake and open passing lanes. Use this play on second and medium to third and long once you have established the run game with HB Power O or HB Counter from the same formation, so linebackers step up on the play fake and vacate the middle for the deep in routes. Check the safety alignment pre-snap: if you see two high safeties sitting deep, target the deep in route away from the safety with the deepest positioning since it will cross behind him. If the defense shows single high or man coverage indicators like tight corner alignment on the outside receivers, hot route one of the ins into a shallow drag to speed up the completion window against blitz looks. Pair this play with Corner Post or Skinny Posts in the same set to keep defenders honest on route depth, then come back to PA Deep In to hit the seam-to-in break once the defense starts jumping the shorter combos.
