Breakdown

Read Option out of Pistol Ace with 12 personnel is a pure zone run play built around the QB and HB alignment shown in the diagram, with the HB set directly behind and slightly offset from the QB in the pistol look. The offensive line shows a standard zone blocking track (green arrow to the play side) while the QB reads the edge defender to decide between handing off to the HB or pulling and running himself. This is a run play, not a play-action or dropback concept, and the primary read progression is the QB keying the unblocked edge defender to determine give or keep before working downhill.

Defensive Reads

Key the play side defensive end pre-snap, if he is crashing hard down the line every time expect the CPU or user QB to keep it on the perimeter. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, linebackers sitting too deep in their fits get gashed on the zone hand off portion of the play. This play struggles against disciplined scrape exchange technique where the DE stays home and the linebacker fills the alley the QB would use to keep. Overloaded run blitzes with extra defenders stacked in the box can blow this up before the mesh point, so bring a fourth or fifth rusher off the edge to force a quick, bad decision. User the play side linebacker and stay square, do not bite on the mesh point fake, since disciplined eyes on the QB take away both the give and the keep options.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the defensive end alignment to confirm whether the edge defender is crashing down or staying wide, since that dictates your keep read before the snap even happens.

Attack light boxes with 6 or fewer defenders in the box, especially against nickel and dime packages that are light at the point of attack.

Pair Read Option with HB Dive and HB Zone Wk to keep the defense guessing between inside zone and the true option keep, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their fits.

If the defense starts crashing hard on the dive every snap, pull the ball more often on Read Option to hit the alley for explosive QB runs.

Use this on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) to stay ahead of the chains and set up PA Boot or PA Ctr Waggle later in the drive once the defense keys run.
