Double Mug

Overview

Double Mug is a defensive set inside Nickel that puts both linebackers directly over the A gaps, mugged up on the line of scrimmage, with the nickel corner walked into the slot and two safeties over the top. Unlike Nickel Double A Gap variants that show pressure from depth, Double Mug commits both mikes to the center's face pre-snap, which forces the offense to declare protection before the snap. Every play in the set, from Cover 3 Sky to Tampa 2 to Nickel Overload 3, starts from the same mugged shell, so the offense cannot separate your blitzes from your coverages by reading linebacker depth.

Strengths

  • The mugged A gap alignment makes it nearly impossible for the offense to identify pressure pre-snap, since Blitz Loop 3, Mid Blitz, SS Blitz 3, and Cover 3 Match all present the same picture.
  • Blitz Loop 3 and Nickel Overload 3 generate interior heat with only four or five rushers, meaning you keep three deep behind it and never expose the sideline to a quick out or fade.
  • Buck Zone Blitz is the money call against the run, since the mugged mikes plug both A gaps immediately and the zone dropper takes away the checkdown that beats most blitzes.
  • Cover 1 Hole gives you a true man call with a hole player under the crossers, and with both linebackers mugged the offense often checks to a slide protection that leaves a back one on one with a blitzer.
  • Cover 2 Invert, 2 Invert Hard Flat, and Nickel 2 Trap let you disguise two deep looks out of the same alignment, which punishes users who read the mug and immediately assume single high.

Weaknesses

  • Both linebackers start on the line, so on any zone call they have to bail into their drop, which leaves the shallow middle wide open for drags, sit routes, and quick slants on early downs.
  • Play action and RPO concepts hurt this set badly, since mugged linebackers commit downhill and the seam or bender behind them opens up with no one in the hole.
  • Nickel 4-2-5 personnel means only two true linebackers, so heavy sets and inside zone from 21 or 22 personnel can wear you out if the mikes get sealed by a guard or fullback.
  • Screens and quick flare passes to the back beat almost every blitz call here, because Blitz Loop 3, Mid Blitz, and SS Blitz 3 all vacate the middle and pull second level defenders forward.
  • Experienced opponents will slide protection or hot route the back to block, which turns your five man pressure into a five on five wash and leaves you playing with fewer coverage bodies.

Usage Tips

Use Double Mug on second and long or third and medium when the offense is likely in an empty or 3x1 spread look, since the mug forces them to account for two interior rushers before the snap.

Mix Cover 3 Sky, Cover 3 Match, and Blitz Loop 3 from the same alignment so your opponent cannot tell blitz from coverage, and always user the deep middle or the hook defender rather than a blitzer.

On coverage calls, pinch or shade your mugged linebackers back a step pre-snap to close the shallow middle, or accept the drag and user match it yourself.

Buck Zone Blitz and Nickel 2 Trap are your run down calls, since both plug the A gaps while keeping a safety leverage player on the boundary to clean up outside zone.

Save Cover 1 Hole and Nickel Overload 3 for third down when the offense has to hold the ball, and be ready to check to Tampa 2 if your opponent starts attacking the seams with vertical concepts.
