Breakdown

Cover 1 Hole is a man coverage blitz look out of the Nickel Double Mug front, showing two mugged linebackers at the line pre-snap with four defenders in press or off-man alignment on the outside receivers. The diagram shows the deep safety rotating over the top as the hole player while a second underneath defender sinks into a shallow zone to rob crossers, with the four rush lanes (red arrows) attacking downhill through the double mug gaps. This is a man beater killer for opposing offenses since it disguises pressure while still playing 1 man under with a robber in the middle, forcing the QB to identify the free hitter before the snap or eat a sack. Primary read progression for the defense is: identify the mugged blitzers first, then key the running back for man match responsibility, and finally trust the hole defender to rob any in-cut or dig route working to the middle of the field.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, key the receiver splits and running back alignment since Cover 1 Hole is vulnerable to any concept that isolates a single receiver against your best man corner on an island. Watch for offenses audibling to quick game or bunch formations that stress the double mug blitz with rub routes designed to pick your man defenders before the rush gets home. Post-snap, the hole defender must sink immediately to the middle third and rob any crossing route or dig route, this is your primary defender against man beater combos like drag and out. If the running back leaks out of the backfield on a check release, your linebacker in man coverage needs to trigger fast since Cover 1 Hole has no extra underneath help once the blitz is triggered. Beware of play-action rollouts and RPOs against this call since the aggressive downhill pursuit of the mugged blitzers can be manipulated with run fakes that hold the linebackers at the line too long.

Usage Tips

Disguise the double mug look until the last possible second so the offense cannot audible into a screen or hot route beater against the blitz.

Use this on third and medium to third and long when the offense is likely to run a dig, curl, or in route over the middle since the hole defender is sitting right in that window.

Pair this call with Blitz Loop 3 and Mid Blitz in your play-calling sequence so the offense sees the same double mug alignment but cannot predict whether you are bringing five or six rushers.

If the offense shows empty or spread formations, consider hot routing your slot corner into a tighter man leverage since Cover 1 Hole leaves your underneath defenders without help outside the numbers.

Bait the QB with the mugged linebackers, then drop one into the shallow hole zone at the snap to jump quick game throws like slants or stick routes.
