Breakdown

Blitz Loop 3 is a Cover 3 zone blitz out of the Nickel Double Mug look, sending a five man rush with a line stunt (loop) up front while dropping the rest into a three deep, three under zone shell. The two purple deep zones and the middle deep zone show classic Cover 3 spacing, with the olive underneath defender sitting in a shallow hole zone to rob crossers and RPO reads. This is a run and pass stopping blitz zone beater designed to disguise pressure with the mugged linebackers while still playing sound zone behind it, so the primary read progression starts with confirming the loop stunt gets home off the edge or interior gap, then working from the deep middle third out to the flats if the quarterback escapes contain.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check if the offense has extra protection on the play side of the loop since that will slow down or kill the stunt before it develops. Watch for the quarterback sliding protection toward the mugged linebackers, which tells you they respect the blitz and you can expect a quick game answer underneath. Post-snap, key the shallow hole defender (olive zone) since he is your first line of defense against drag routes and RPO quick game that try to beat the blitz before it arrives. This beats man beater route combos that rely on a clean pocket since the loop stunt disrupts protection timing and forces early throws into a three deep shell. Cover 3 zone beaters like flood concepts to the deep sideline can still hurt this if the loop does not get pressure in time, so trust the deep thirds to hold up while the rush works.

Usage Tips

Use the mugged double A gap look pre-snap to bait the quarterback into thinking its a straight blitz, then let the loop stunt create confusion on the interior offensive line.

Call this when the offense is in a run heavy personnel on early downs since the underneath zone defenders can still fit run gaps behind the stunt.

Pair this with Nickel Dog 3 Buzz and SS Blitz 3 in the same set to keep the same pre-snap picture while varying who actually loops and who drops, making it harder for the offense to diagnose the rush.

On third and medium, user the looping defender manually to time the stunt against the center or guard, then let the zone drops play themselves since the shell is sound against quick game.

Avoid calling this against empty formations since the loop stunt needs extra protection accounted for or you risk a free runner giving up an explosive play instead of a sack.
