Nickel Sim 2 is a simulated pressure call out of the Double Mug look in Nickel Double Mug. Both mugged linebackers show blitz but drop into underneath zone coverage (the two red arrow icons and the flat defender), while the two deep safeties bail into a Cover 2 shell over the top. On the edges, one DB blitzes off the corner while the opposite CB carries a deep third responsibility, giving this play both a simulated rush look and true zone drop coverage underneath. This is a zone coverage call designed to disguise pressure and bait quarterbacks into thinking a blitz is coming, with the primary read starting at the disguised A gap defenders to see who actually rushes versus drops before working coverage to the deep half safeties.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the offense is checking to a hot route or screen against the mugged look, since that tells you they respect the pressure. Post-snap, key the two shallow drop defenders since they are reading the quarterback's eyes and driving on any quick out or slant thrown into their zone. This call is effective against man beater route combos and quick game concepts that try to exploit blitz-heavy fronts, since the actual drop into zone catches those routes. It struggles against play-action rollouts and deep shot plays if the offense correctly diagnoses the sim pressure and holds protection, since only one true rusher may get home. Watch for the offensive line's protection slide pre-snap, if they are sliding hard toward the mugged backers, expect a quick throw away from the pressure that this zone drop is designed to squat on.
Usage Tips
Show blitz pre-snap by mugging both linebackers to sell pressure and force the offense into a hot route or quick game mentality.
Watch the QB's eyes after the snap since the delayed underneath drops from the mugged backers are designed to jump hot routes and quick slants.
Use this on passing downs like 2nd and long or 3rd and medium when offenses expect either a blitz or a simple zone shell, since the disguise creates hesitation.
Pair Nickel Sim 2 with Nickel Dog 3 Buzz or SS Blitz 3 in the same set so the offense cannot key on your pre-snap mug alignment and has to respect actual pressure on other calls.
User the deep half safety on the side of your blitzing DB to help squeeze any vertical shot routes that try to attack the vacated zone before the safety rotates over.
