Breakdown

Buck Zone Blitz is a five man zone pressure out of Nickel Double Mug that sends the two mugged linebackers off the edges while dropping the underneath defenders into a five man zone shell underneath three deep zone droppers. The diagram shows both outside linebackers crashing off the edge as the primary blitzers with the middle linebacker also stepping up into a shallow zone drop, while three defensive backs sink into deep thirds and the nickel and remaining underneath defenders wall off the flats and shallow crossers. This is a zone blitz designed to disguise pressure while still holding zone integrity underneath and deep, so the offense has to identify the rush before working through any hot or quick game concept.

Defensive Reads

Watch for empty or spread formations that try to isolate the mugged linebackers with hot routes into the vacated edge lanes. If the offense sends both outside receivers vertical immediately, expect the deep thirds to be stressed since only three defenders are dropping deep. Look for the running back checking into a swing or screen route since the zone blitz can be vulnerable if the underneath defenders bite on the initial edge pressure fake. Key on the quarterback's eyes after the snap, if he is looking to the flats early he may be trying to exploit the space vacated by the blitzing linebackers before the underneath zone defenders can rotate over. This look shuts down quick game and man beater route combos but can be exposed by well timed screens or draws if the offense diagnoses the mugged pressure pre-snap.

Usage Tips

Show this look after running Cover 1 Hole or Mid Blitz from the same set so the offense cannot key off your mugged look pre-snap.

Disguise the double mug alignment until right before the snap so the quarterback cannot get a free pre-snap read on which side the pressure is coming from.

Use this on early down and medium to long yardage situations where offenses are likely to call quick game or spot concepts that get eaten up by the underneath zone defenders.

User the middle linebacker and spy any scrambling quarterback tendencies since he is dropping into a shallow zone rather than blitzing.

Bait the offense into thinking it is man coverage with the mugged backers, then let the edge pressure and zone drops close throwing lanes before the quarterback can climb the pocket.
