Buck Zone Blitz out of Nickel Double Mug shows a five man pressure look with double mugged linebackers at the second level. Post snap the diagram shows a zone drop shell underneath: two purple hook/curl zones flanking the field, a shallow flat/spot zone in the middle underneath, and three deep blue zones split across the top of the picture to protect over the top. This is a zone blitz design, meaning the pressure package brings extra rushers while dropping a defensive lineman or extra defender into a shallow zone to disguise coverage, and it is built to bait quarterbacks into hot throws that walk right into the underneath zone drops.
Defensive Reads
Pre snap, check safety depth and cornerback alignment to confirm this is not walking into an empty backfield audible that can exploit the middle hook zone with a seam route. Post snap, key the quarterback's eyes toward the shallow zone in the middle of the field since that underneath defender is the primary robber against quick hitters and drags. This call is strong against man beater route combos like slants and quick outs since the zone drops undercut those throws before they develop. It is vulnerable to well timed levels concepts or shallow cross combinations that attack the seams between the two purple flank zones, so user control a linebacker if you see a crossing route stem developing early. Watch for hot route sight adjustments on trips or bunch formations, since a savvy offense will convert a route to sit right behind the vacated blitz gap if your rush lanes get picked off at the snap.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs or third and medium when you expect a quick game or shotgun spread attack that wants to throw hot to beat pressure. Show the double mug look pre snap to freeze the quarterback into thinking a blitz is coming even on reps where you plan to bail into coverage, then mix in this actual blitz call so both looks play off each other. Key the offensive line's protection slide before the snap, if the center or guards are sliding toward the mug alignment you know your pressure is unblocked and can send it with confidence. Pair this call with Nickel Dog 3 Buzz and SS Blitz 3 from the same set so the offense cannot sit on one blitz shape or one drop pattern. Avoid calling this against heavy play-action rollout teams on early downs since the vacated underneath zones can be exploited if your rush does not get home quickly.
