Nickel 2 Trap is a zone coverage call out of the 3-3 Will Nickel set built around Cover 2 principles with a trap corner mechanic on the flat. The two deep safeties split the field in half while the corners squat on the underneath routes looking to jump quick outs and hitches before working back to their deep quarter responsibilities. This is a zone beater designed to bait quarterbacks into throwing hot routes and shallow crossers, and the primary read progression starts with the trap corner reading the number two receiver's release before triggering on any ball thrown to the flat or boundary.
Watch for the number two receiver releasing outside immediately, which tells you the offense is attacking the flat where your trap corner is sitting. If the offense runs four verticals or a deep dig from a stack alignment, your two deep safeties can get stressed since Nickel 2 Trap is vulnerable to seam throws between the safety and the trap corner. Post snap, key the running back out of the backfield on wheel routes since the trap corner squatting underneath can be beaten deep if he bites too hard on the flat fake. Look for user controlled receivers running speed outs or quick slants since this coverage is designed to jump those exact routes with the trap corner mechanic. Against play action rollouts, make sure the flat defender does not overcommit to the run fake, since the trap corner leaving early opens the boundary for an easy pitch and catch.
Call this on early downs or obvious passing situations where the offense is likely to attack the flat with quick game concepts like curl flat or spot routes.
Pre snap, identify if the offense is trips or bunched to one side since the trap corner mechanic works best against single receiver reads on the boundary.
User the trap corner yourself to bait the quarterback into a quick throw, then drive on the route once the ball is released for a potential jump ball or pick six.
Combine this with Cover 2 Man and Tampa 2 from the same set so the offense cannot key on your safety depth or corner leverage pre snap, keeping run fits and coverage disguises consistent.
Use Nickel Sim 2 or Show SS Sim 2 as change up calls after running Nickel 2 Trap a few times so quarterbacks who diagnosed the trap corner get baited into a different look.
