3-3 Over

Nickel·3-3 Will·Personnel not specified

Breakdown

3-3 Over is a zone coverage shell out of the Nickel 3-3 Will set that shifts the defensive front and second level to the strong side to clog inside run lanes while keeping four underneath zone defenders and three deep. It is not an offensive concept, it is a zone beater on the back end designed to pattern match against trips and slot heavy formations by rerouting the strong side receiver and passing off crossers between the underneath defenders. The primary read for the defense is deep third to deep third first, then break down to the flats and hook zones as the quarterback works his progression, essentially a spot drop shell that funnels throws into the underneath defenders' vision.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety alignment for two-high versus single-high, since 3-3 Over typically shows a two-high shell that can rotate down into a three deep zone after the snap. Watch the slot cornerback and nickel defender leverage, they key whether the offense is attacking the flat with a quick screen or bubble, so squeeze that leverage immediately at the snap. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's drop, if he sits too shallow in the hook he opens up seam throws behind him against four verticals or dagger concepts. This shell struggles against fast developing man beaters like slants and stick routes where the quarterback throws with anticipation before the zone fully rotates, so disguise your drops as long as possible. It holds up well against inside runs and play-action rollouts because the overshifted front and extra linebacker in the box clog cutback lanes, look for user controlled defenders to stay disciplined in their run fits before flowing to their zone drops.

Usage Tips

Call 3-3 Over on early downs when you expect inside zone runs or play-action bootlegs, since the overshifted front helps you win the point of attack against gap schemes.

Use pre-snap motion to identify if the offense is running a bunch or trips concept, then adjust your flat defender depth to prevent easy pitch and catch throws to the boundary.

Combine this call with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Cloud later in a series so the quarterback sees a similar shell but gets a different underneath rotation, creating confusion on his hot read.

Bring 3-3 Over out on third and medium when you want zone integrity against digs and curls, then follow it up with Nickel Sim 2 to disguise pressure off the same look.

Spot drop your underneath defenders with discipline and do not bite on double moves, since the shell is vulnerable if a linebacker jumps a route too early and vacates his zone.
