1 Double Slot out of 3-3 Will Nickel is a man beater built around two slot receivers running crossing and settle routes to attack the leverage of man defenders underneath while the outside receivers stretch the field vertically to hold the safeties. It is tagged Cover 1 and Man Coverage, which tells you the play design is meant to create natural rubs and traffic against a single high safety look with man principles across the board. The primary read starts with the inside slot receiver working the shallow crosser for immediate separation against man leverage, then progresses to the deep outside route if the linebacker or nickel defender trails too far underneath.
Identify one high safety pre-snap, this is the clearest indicator you are facing Cover 1 which is exactly what this play is built to punish with its crossing slot concept. Watch for a robber or spy defender sitting in the middle of the field, since Cover 1 Robber or Cover 1 LB Spy can jump the inside crossing routes and turn this into a turnover opportunity for the defense. Key the nickel defender and linebacker depth at the snap, if they are playing tight man technique on the slots without help over the top, the crossing routes will win quickly. Look for user controlled defenders sitting in passing lanes near the slot alignment, a smart user playing Cover 1 Hole or Cover 1 Hole Press can rob the shallow crosser and force you to your outside progression. Beware disguised zone pressure like Sim Pressure 3 or Edge Blitz 0 that show man alignment pre-snap but drop into zone or bring extra rushers, since this can collapse your protection before the crossers develop.
Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see one high safety with corners playing tight leverage on the slots, you are getting the Cover 1 or Man Coverage look this play is designed to attack.
Hot route the backside outside receiver into a quick out or slant if the corner is playing off man, giving you a quick throw option away from the double slot concept.
Use motion on one of the slot receivers to confirm man coverage before the snap, if the defender follows across the formation you have a clean man beater matchup to exploit.
Pair this play with 1 Double TE or 1 Double Wr2 in the same set to keep the defense guessing between double slot crossing concepts and different formation looks without changing your run or pass tendencies.
Call this on early downs against aggressive man corners or in the red zone where the natural pick action from the crossing slots creates easy separation for a low risk completion.
