Cover 3 Cloud is a zone coverage call out of the 3-3 Will Nickel front that rolls the strong safety down into the flat while the corner to that side sinks into a deep third, creating a cloud technique that squeezes hitches, flat routes, and quick outs to the boundary. The three deep defenders (both corners and the free safety) split the field into thirds while the remaining four defenders play underneath zones, with the Will linebacker and nickel defender working the middle hook and curl areas. This is a zone beater designed to shut down quick game and boundary flat concepts, and the primary read starts with the flat defender squeezing any speed out or flat route before working back to the deep third defender reading the vertical shell.
Pre-snap, identify if the strong safety is cheating down toward the line, that alignment signals the cloud rotation and warns you the flat and quick hitches to that side are taken away. Post-snap, key the flat defender first, if he squeezes an out route or bubble screen immediately that confirms cloud technique is executing correctly and receivers underneath will have no room. Watch for offenses attacking the deep middle third with a vertical seam or skinny post, since the free safety is the only deep defender in the middle and can be stressed by two vertical routes stacked on the same side. This shell struggles against four verticals or a heavy trips concept to the weak side, since the boundary corner is isolated in a deep third with no safety help if the offense overloads that zone. User the nickel or Will linebacker as a lurk defender in the shallow crossing lanes, since spot drop AI can bite on double moves or delayed crossers that attack the seam between the underneath zones.
Call this on early downs or third and medium when you expect the offense to attack the flat with quick game or bubble screens, since the cloud technique jumps those routes immediately.
Check the pre-snap alignment of the strong safety, if he is walked down near the line of scrimmage that confirms the cloud rotation and tells you the boundary flat and quick out are covered.
Use flat zone hot routes sparingly here since the defense already has extra numbers to the strong side flat, instead spot drop your underneath defenders to take away crossing routes and dig concepts over the middle.
Pair this play with Cover 3 Sky and Cover 3 Buzz Mable in the same set so the offense cannot key on the strong safety rotation, this disguise package keeps quarterbacks guessing between cloud, sky, and buzz rotations from the same pre-snap look.
Follow up a successful Cover 3 Cloud stop with Cover 4 Palms or Cover 4 Quarters on the next snap to bait the offense into thinking you are staying two high while still playing three deep zone shells underneath.
