Cover 1 Robber Press is a man-heavy defensive call out of the 3-3 Will Nickel front that puts press man coverage on the outside corners with a single deep safety over the top and a robber defender sitting underneath in the middle of the field. The robber reads the quarterback's eyes and jumps intermediate crossers or drag routes, making this a strong man beater deterrent against slot-seam and mesh concepts while still holding up against vertical shots thanks to the deep half safety. Primary read progression starts with identifying the number one receiver's release at the line, then flowing eyes to the quarterback to trigger the robber into any in-breaking route before checking run support fits if the play design shows run action.
Watch the running back and tight end release pre-snap since the robber will key their routes first, so isolate backs running to the flat or seam early. If the offense lines up with two receivers stacked or bunched to one side, expect rub routes designed to beat press man, so be ready to squeeze the release with your press corner. Post-snap, track the quarterback's eyes because the robber defender is reading the QB to trigger on drags, crossers, and dig routes in the intermediate middle. This coverage struggles against four verticals or double moves on an island corner, so if you see empty formations or trips with a deep threat isolated, expect the offense to attack the press corner one on one. Look for user lurk threats sitting in the shallow middle since a smart defender can jump quick hitters and options routes before the ball is thrown, forcing quarterbacks to hold the ball longer against this shell.
Use this call on early downs when you expect the offense to test man coverage with drag or slant combos since the robber defender is designed to sit on those routes.
Press man on the corners means you should user the corner if you are worried about elite route runners beating the CPU off the line, especially against double moves.
Check pre-snap for bunch or stack formations that can create natural picks against press technique, and consider audibling to a zone shell if you see heavy stack alignment.
