Breakdown

Cross Sim 2 is a Cover 2 simulated pressure call out of the 3-3 Will Nickel front that disguises a line stunt blitz behind a two deep zone shell. Up front the defense drops a designated rusher into coverage while stunting the interior linemen to free up an unblocked rusher through a gap, creating a fast interior pressure without selling out on numbers. Your primary read starts with the stunt timing off the edge or A gap, then works back to the two deep safeties squeezing the seams and the underneath zone defenders jumping shallow crossers and flat routes.

Defensive Reads

Read the offensive line splits and running back alignment pre-snap, since a tight split on the stunt side often means the blocker is late picking up the interior rusher. Key the quarterback's eyes after the snap, if he is looking to the flat or shallow drag immediately, close that window fast since the underneath zone defender is sitting on it. Watch for hot routes or sight adjustments from slot receivers against the stunting linebacker's vacated area, that is the primary window man beaters attack. This call struggles against quick game concepts like stick or snag that get the ball out before the stunt finishes developing, and it is vulnerable to draw plays that hit right into the gap the stunt creates if the linebackers overpursue. Watch trips and bunch formations closely, since they can identify the stunt side and use natural picks or rub routes to clear the shallow crosser before the zone defender can react.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or second and medium when offenses expect a standard four man rush look, since the simulated pressure catches play callers off guard. Pre-snap, check if the offense is in a spread trips or bunch set that isolates one blocker on the stunt side, since that is where the free rusher usually wins. If the QB starts sliding protection toward the stunt, user the dropping defender into the shallow drag or crosser to bait a throw into the two deep shell. Pair Cross Sim 2 with Cover 2 Man or Tampa 2 earlier in a series so the offense sees a two deep picture and cannot distinguish the pressure look from a standard drop back coverage. Stick to money downs like third and medium to long where quarterbacks hold the ball an extra beat, giving the stunt time to develop and collapse the pocket.
