Cover 4 Palms

Nickel·3-3 Will·Personnel not specified

Breakdown

Cover 4 Palms is a zone coverage call out of the 3-3 Will Nickel set that uses a two-read shell on the strong side to jump smash concepts and outside hitches while playing quarters principles everywhere else. The corner reads number two to trigger a flat squat while the safety plays number one vertically, and the three remaining underneath defenders wall off inside seams and drag routes. This is a zone beater against pass concepts that attack the flats and deep outside, and the primary read progression for the defense starts with the number two receiver to the trigger side before working back to the deep quarter responsibilities.

Defensive Reads

Read the corner's initial jump on number two before the snap, if he sits low and inside expect Palms and attack the flat conflict with a double move. Check safety depth on the trigger side, a deep half shade indicates the safety is reading number one vertically and will not help underneath. Watch linebacker spacing at the snap, if the three underneath defenders are walling off inside seams and drags, hit outside breaking routes before the corner recovers. This shell struggles against trips or bunch formations that create a true three level stretch on the trigger side, since the corner and safety can lose leverage on the extra receiver. Post snap, key the flat defender's first two steps, hesitation there opens a throwing window on quick outs before the defender can fully commit to the flat zone.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or third and medium when you expect the offense to attack the flat with a smash or slot fade combo since the corner sits on number two to jump the quick route.

Check the offensive formation pre snap for stacked or bunch looks to the trigger side, since Palms is built to handle two receiver combos and can get confused if the offense flips strength late.

Use hot routes to widen your flat defender if you see a tendency toward speed outs or hitch routes that try to sit outside the corner's cushion.

Pair this call with Cover 4 Quarters or Cover 3 Sky from the same set so quarterback reads look identical pre snap, then let Palms jump the underneath route the QB expects to be open in a true quarters shell.

Avoid this call versus heavy four verticals stress or trips looks to one side, since the flat defender can get isolated if the offense overloads that side with three receivers.
