Breakdown

Nickel Sim 2 is a simulated pressure package out of the 3-3 Will Nickel front that shows a potential blitz look before dropping into a Cover 2 zone shell behind it. Up front the defense sends a designed DB blitz off the edge while the linebackers and remaining defensive backs bail into their Cover 2 zone drops, creating a disguised look that plays like pressure but functions as a four man rush with sound zone coverage behind it. The primary read for the defense is the quarterback's eyes: if he holds the ball or checks it down late, the DB blitz off the slot or overhang gets home, and if he throws hot into the flat or underneath, the two deep safeties and underneath zone defenders are there to rally and limit yards after catch.

Defensive Reads

Watch for offenses that use hot motion or shifts to identify the overhang defender responsible for the DB blitz, since a quick out or slant to that side beats the pressure before it arrives. Post-snap, key the underneath zone defenders sinking into their Cover 2 flat and curl drops, since this is where the coverage is most vulnerable against quick spacing and stick concepts. This play beats offenses that hold the ball in structured dropback passing situations, since the simulated pressure disrupts protection timing while zone eyes stay on the quarterback. Slot fades and deep corner routes attack the two deep safety shell if the coverage is Cover 2, so if the offense aligns with a boundary receiver isolated wide, expect a shot play attempt. Quarterbacks who throw hot to the flat or check down immediately negate the DB blitz, so if you see a running back releasing quickly on early downs, be ready for a shorter developing route to counter the pressure.

Usage Tips

Use Nickel Sim 2 on early downs or in obvious passing situations where the offense expects a standard Cover 2 shell and does not anticipate the extra pressure element.

Disguise the DB blitz by showing a two high safety look pre-snap and only rotating one safety down after the snap, this keeps quarterbacks from diagnosing the sim pressure until it is too late.

Pair this call with Cover 2 Man or Tampa 2 in the same set so your pre-snap picture stays consistent across multiple calls, making it harder for opponents to key blitz versus coverage based on alignment alone.

User the blitzing defensive back manually to time the snap count and attack the quarterback's blind side, since the CPU logic on this DB blitz can be slow to close on mobile quarterbacks.

Avoid calling this against empty formations or quick game concepts, since the hot route into the vacated DB blitz lane can be an instant answer if the offense identifies the pressure pre-snap.
