Breakdown

SS Dog 3 is a Cover 3 safety blitz out of the Nickel 3-3 Dbl Mug set that sends the strong safety off the edge while dropping the defensive line into a zone shell behind it. The three deep defenders bracket the field with vertical zone drops, two flat defenders (marked with X) sink outside to protect the perimeter, and the underneath zone defender in the middle spins over the ball to rob any crossing routes. This is a five-man pressure look designed to disguise the extra rusher pre-snap while still playing three-deep, three-under zone coverage behind it, making it a strong zone beater deterrent against man concepts and quick-game passing attacks.

Defensive Reads

Read the offensive formation pre-snap for trips or bunch sets that could overload the flat zones on either side of the field. Watch for quick game and hitch or slant concepts, since those routes are designed to exploit the space vacated by the blitzing strong safety before the zone can rotate. Key the running back release out of the backfield, since he is the first hot read against this five-man pressure and can beat the underneath zone defender in the void. Look for play-action or RPO shots off run action, since the deep three-zone defenders have to honor run fits first and can be susceptible to double moves behind them. Post-snap, track whether the middle underneath defender gets to his spin drop in time, because any hesitation opens a seam for crossing routes over the middle.

Usage Tips

Disguise the safety blitz by mugging both linebackers at the line before the snap so the quarterback cannot identify which gap the pressure is coming from.

Use this call on third and medium to third and long when offenses are likely to sit in quick game or shotgun spread since the extra rusher forces a fast decision.

Pair SS Dog 3 with Nickel Dog 3 Buzz and Nickel Dog Meg in the same play-calling sequence so quarterbacks cannot key on the strong safety blitz look every time.

Hot route the flat defenders to widen if you see stick or flat concepts stacking the perimeter, since the zone drop can get stretched horizontally.

Spy the underneath middle defender manually if you see a running quarterback, since the zone drop alone may not account for scrambles up the middle.
