Buck Zone Blitz brings pressure off the second level while dropping into a zone shell behind it, making this a zone blitz designed to disguise pressure and still hold underneath and deep thirds. At the snap five rushers attack downhill (the red arrows) while the two outside defenders and the middle linebacker area drop into short zone drops, and the yellow zone in the middle signals a robber or middle hook defender sitting in the box to take away crossers and drags. The blocking is on the offense's side, but from the defensive read this is a five-man pressure look with three-under zone drops behind it, so the primary read progression for the defense is: confirm the blitz gets home, then key the QB's eyes to see if he tries to beat the zone drops underneath before the rush arrives.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the offense is in a spread formation with quick game tendencies, since this blitz eats up hot routes and quick outs before they develop. Watch the running back and inline tight end for check release responsibilities, since a delayed blitz pickup here can spring a free rusher. Post-snap, key the middle zone defender (yellow zone) for any crossing routes or drag concepts trying to sit down in the vacated area behind the blitz. This look struggles against quick pick and rub combinations and hard playaction rollouts that get the quarterback outside the pocket before the rush closes. It excels against slow-developing man beater concepts and any offense that relies on the running back checking blitz before releasing.
Usage Tips
Use this call on early downs or short-to-medium yardage when you want pressure without fully committing to man coverage behind it.
Disguise the Mug look pre-snap by showing two linebackers at the line then dropping one into the shallow zone at the snap to bait the quarterback into a bad read.
Pair this with Cover 1 Hole and Nickel Dog Meg from the same set so quarterbacks cannot key blitzer identity or coverage shell based on pre-snap alignment.
Hot route the flat defenders to widen if you are facing heavy flood or smash concepts that attack the sideline quickly.
Save this for known pass downs against offenses that rely on quick game or spread sets, since the underneath zone drops close throwing lanes before the rush even arrives.
