Breakdown

Cover 3 Match is a zone defense out of the 3-3 Dbl Mug set in Nickel personnel, showing two mugged interior linebackers at the line pre-snap to disguise the blitz look before dropping into coverage. The three deep defenders (both corners and the deep safety) run vertical zone drops to take away the deep thirds, while the underneath defenders including both mugged backers and the two flanking zone droppers sink into curl-flat and hook zones to match up with any receivers who enter their landmarks. This is a zone coverage that plays match principles underneath, meaning defenders read route distribution and convert to man coverage on receivers who threaten their zone rather than sitting in a pure spot drop, making it effective against both quick game concepts and vertical shots. The primary read progression starts with reading the number two receiver's release to determine if the underneath defenders need to buzz to a curl or wall off a seam, then working from deep third integrity outward to the flat defenders.

Defensive Reads

Watch for the offense attacking the seams between the deep thirds and the underneath flat defenders, since that is the natural stress point of any Cover 3 Match shell. Identify trips or bunch formations pre-snap, as they can overload one side and force your underneath defenders into conflict between curl and flat responsibilities. Post-snap, key the number two receiver's vertical release, if he threatens the seam the underneath defender must match him in man rather than sitting in a zone drop. This coverage is vulnerable to quick slant flat combinations and levels concepts that attack the shallow zone before the linebackers can sink to depth, so trigger downhill fast on any quick game read. Against four verticals, trust the deep third defenders to hold their landmarks and use your user controlled defender to help double the most dangerous vertical threat, usually the seam route from the slot.

Usage Tips

Use the mugged linebacker alignment pre-snap to sell pressure and bait the quarterback into a hot throw or checkdown that your underneath match defenders can jump.

Against spread formations with three or more receivers to one side, check your flat defender's assignment to make sure he can wall off quick out and flat routes before the snap.

This call is ideal on third and medium to third and long since the deep thirds take away the explosive play while the match principles underneath limit conversions on curls and digs.

Pair this with Cover 1 Hole or SS Dog 3 from the same set so quarterbacks cannot key off the mugged backers to diagnose blitz versus coverage, forcing hesitation in the pocket.

Use user control on the deep middle safety to rob any dig or post route crossing the middle of the field, since the zone match underneath can get stressed by high low reads on the seams.
