Nickel Dog Meg is a five-man pressure package out of the 3-3 Dbl Mug look with a two-man deep shell over the top. The diagram shows two deep defenders peeling off to cover the outside thirds while three underneath defenders spike downhill into short zone drops, and the interior mug linebackers crash the box on the blitz. This is a zone blitz beater killer, sending extra rushers while keeping two high safeties to take away the deep ball, so it is not a pure man beater but rather a disguised zone pressure look. The primary read progression for the defense is to get eyes on the quarterback's drop, trigger the underneath spikers to the shallow crossers first, then rally to any check down since the deep two are locked into their outside thirds.
Pre-snap, check if the offense has a running back releasing to the flat or a tight end running a shallow drag, since those are the exact routes the underneath spikers are designed to close on. Watch for the offense sliding protection toward the Mug alignment presnap, which tells you the quarterback has identified pressure coming from the interior and may be planning a quick throw to the boundary. Post-snap, key the two deep defenders bailing to their outside thirds immediately, which means anything thrown deep between the numbers and the sideline should be there for the underneath help to rally. If the quarterback holds the ball past the initial rush and starts to scramble, user control an underneath defender to spy the middle of the field since the shallow zones can collapse toward the sideline and leave the middle open. This look gets beat by quick slants and hitches thrown before the pressure closes, so if you see three or more receivers running quick routes at the snap, be ready to sim the blitz next play to keep the offense honest.
Use this call on early downs when you suspect the offense is going to try a quick game or shallow cross to beat pressure since the underneath spikers are designed to jump those routes.
Disguise the blitz by showing a standard Mug look pre-snap and delay your defender movement until just before the snap to prevent the quarterback from diagnosing the pressure and adjusting protection.
Pair this with Nickel Dog 3 Buzz and Nickel Sim 2 in the same play-calling sequence so the offense cannot key on the two deep defenders peeling outside every time you show this personnel.
User the middle defender manually to rob any drag or spot route crossing the field since the shallow underneath zone is the primary vulnerability against quick pass concepts.
Call this on third and medium to third and long when the offense is likely to throw quickly against pressure, since the two deep outside defenders eliminate go routes and deep outs.
