Nickel Overload 3 is a DB blitz out of the 3-3 Dbl Mug look that sends a slot corner off the edge on an overload rush to one side while dropping the remaining defenders into a Cover 3 shell behind it. The diagram shows both outside corners squeezing hard off the snap into deep thirds, the middle linebacker sinking into a deep middle zone, and the underneath defenders spreading into short zone drops to cover the flats and hook areas. This is a zone beater blitz, so the priority is generating pressure with the overload rush while still holding three deep and playing sound zone coverage underneath.
Read the offensive formation pre-snap for backfield count, since a lone running back or empty set tells you where the extra blocker is not and confirms the overload side will win. Watch the quarterback's eyes after the snap to anticipate a quick throw into the flat zone vacated by the blitzing DB. Key on tight end or slot receiver releases into the underneath zones, since the hook and flat defenders must stay disciplined against option routes and drag concepts. This beats teams that rely on five and seven step drop dropback passing since the overload rush collapses the pocket before routes develop. Man beater concepts like drag and crossing routes right into the vacated blitz lane can shut this down if the underneath zone defenders lose depth or leverage.
Call this on early downs or third and medium when you want extra pressure without fully abandoning zone integrity behind it.
Identify which side the overload rush is coming from pre-snap and user the rushing DB to time the blitz with the snap count for max disruption.
Pair this with Nickel Dog 3 Buzz or SS Dog 3 in your playcalling sequence so opponents cannot key on the same pressure look every series.
Watch for quick game and hot routes designed to attack the vacated area the overload defender leaves behind, since the underneath zone drops can be stretched thin.
Use this against offenses that rely on max protect shotgun sets, since the overload rush numbers advantage wins quickly if the protection cannot account for the extra rusher.
