Fake Punt Shovel is a trick play out of the Special Punt formation designed to catch aggressive punt-return units off guard. On the snap, the shovel man motions across the backfield to receive a quick shovel pitch from the punter, who sells the punt fake before dumping it off behind a wall of blockers pulling to the play side. This is a gap-scheme run play, not a pass, so the primary read is simply whether the edge is sealed: if the personal protector and up-back get their blocks on the second level, the shovel runner should have a clean lane to the sideline before the return team reacts.
Pre-snap, identify whether the return unit has any players creeping toward the line of scrimmage, since that signals a punt-safe or fake-punt-aware call that will not bite on the shovel action. Watch the gunners and outside contain defenders for width: if they stay disciplined at the numbers instead of crashing inside, the shovel lane to the sideline gets shut down quickly. Track the personal protector and up-back at the snap since their blocking angles reveal whether the shovel is designed to hit inside or bounce outside, which tells the defense where to funnel pursuit. Linebacker depth on the return team matters: shallow linebackers who read run quickly can beat the shovel to the spot, while deep-set return personnel are late to react and give up the edge. If the defense shows any hint of a punt block package with rushers stacked on the interior, expect the shovel fake to be abandoned or blown up immediately since those rushers disrupt the timing before the pitch happens.
Only call this when the defense has shown a punt-return alignment with no rush distinction, ideally with return men set up ten-plus yards deep and not crashing the line.
Use this on your own side of the field on 4th-and-manageable or in field position spots where a busted play does not sink your win probability, since a stuffed fake gives the opponent a short field.
Mix this into your fake punt sequence early in a set so the defense cannot key on tendencies later, then follow it up with Fake Punt Off Tackle or Fake Punt Sweep to attack the same edge from a different angle once they adjust.
Watch the return team's outside leverage defenders before the snap: if they are lined up wide and deep, the shovel's quick hitting nature exploits the gap before contain can squeeze it.
Avoid running this against teams that have shown safe punt or block-punt personnel, since extra rushers crashing downhill will blow up the shovel pitch before it develops.
